What is a Slack Recap?
A Slack recap is an automated summary of everything that happened in a Slack channel over a specific time period. Instead of scrolling through hundreds of messages to catch up, you get a structured digest delivered right to your channel or DM.
Recaps are typically scheduled weekly (Monday morning is most popular), but you can configure daily, monthly, or quarterly summaries depending on channel activity. They're perfect for:
- Team leads who need visibility without reading every message
- Remote teams working across time zones who miss real-time discussions
- Leadership who want high-level updates without the noise
- Anyone returning from PTO or joining a team mid-project
With Recal, you set up a recap once and forget about it. The AI monitors your channel and delivers structured summaries automatically — no manual effort required.

A Slack recap is an automated summary of everything that happened in a Slack channel over a specific time period (daily, weekly, or monthly). It includes highlights, key decisions, blockers, progress updates, open questions, and action items — all delivered to your channel or DM on a schedule you choose.
Once you configure a recap in Recal, the system automatically fetches messages from your selected channel at your scheduled time. AI analyzes all messages from that period and posts a structured summary directly to Slack. You can choose daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly frequencies.
You have three options: post the recap to the same channel being summarized, send it to a different channel (like #team-updates or #leadership), or receive it as a private DM to yourself. Most teams post weekly recaps to the same channel or a dedicated updates channel.
Each recap includes six key sections: Highlights (top announcements and wins), Decisions (what was agreed upon), Blockers (issues needing attention), Progress (completed work and status updates), Open Questions (topics needing follow-up), and Action Items (tasks with owners and deadlines).
Recal analyzes all messages from your selected time period, up to 90 days of history available through Slack's API. For weekly recaps, this typically covers hundreds of messages condensed into a quick 2-minute read.
Yes! You set the exact day, time, and timezone for delivery. Most teams schedule Monday morning weekly recaps so everyone starts the week informed. You can also run test recaps anytime to preview the output before enabling the schedule.
Each recap counts as one Slack analysis against your monthly quota. Starter plans include 5 analyses/month, Pro includes 50, and Premium includes unlimited. You can create multiple recaps for different channels, each on their own schedule.
Reading a week's worth of messages in an active channel takes 20-30 minutes. A Recal recap condenses that into a 2-minute structured read, highlighting what actually matters. No scrolling, no missing buried decisions — just the key information organized clearly.
