What is a Slack Weekly Recap?
A Slack weekly recap is an automated summary delivered to your Slack channel (or DM) once a week. It condenses 7 days of conversations into a structured digest you can read in 2 minutes.
Instead of scrolling through hundreds of messages every Monday morning to catch up, you get a clear overview of:
- What happened — Key announcements, updates, and highlights
- What was decided — Agreements and finalized plans
- What's blocked — Issues needing attention
- What's next — Action items with owners and deadlines
Weekly recaps are the most popular cadence for team channels. They're perfect for teams that move fast during the week and need a structured moment to align on what happened.
Your Monday Morning
Without weekly recaps
Open Slack → 500+ unread messages → Scroll for 30 minutes → Miss the important stuff anyway
With Recal weekly recaps
Open Slack → Read recap → 2 minutes → Know exactly what happened, what's decided, what's next
Why Teams Love Weekly Recaps
The most popular recap schedule — and for good reason.
Save 2+ hours per week
Reading a week of messages takes 20-30 minutes per channel. A recap takes 2 minutes. For multiple channels, that's hours saved.
Keep everyone aligned
The whole team reads the same structured summary. No more 'I didn't see that message' or 'wait, we decided that?'
Never miss decisions
Important decisions get highlighted, not buried in message #147. You'll know what was agreed and who's responsible.
Zero ongoing effort
Set up once in 2 minutes. Recaps arrive automatically every week — no manual work, no remembering to do it.

Common questions about automated weekly recaps. Need more help? Reach out to us.
A Slack weekly recap is an automated summary of everything that happened in a channel over the past week. Delivered at a scheduled time (typically Monday morning), it includes highlights, decisions made, blockers, progress updates, open questions, and action items — giving your team a structured overview of the week's activity.
With Recal, setup takes about 2 minutes: 1) Add Recal to your Slack workspace, 2) Create a new recap in the dashboard, 3) Select your channel and set frequency to 'Weekly', 4) Choose the day (most pick Monday) and time, 5) Hit 'Test Now' to preview, then activate. Recaps arrive automatically from then on.
Most teams schedule weekly recaps for Monday morning (8-10am local time) so everyone starts the week informed about what happened last week. Some teams prefer Friday afternoon to close out the week. You can set any day and time that works for your team's timezone.
Each weekly recap includes six sections: Highlights (top announcements and wins), Decisions (what was agreed upon), Blockers (issues needing attention), Progress (completed work), Open Questions (topics needing follow-up), and Action Items (tasks with owners and deadlines). It also shows the date range and total messages analyzed.
Recal analyzes all messages from the past 7 days in your selected channel — often hundreds of messages for active channels. The AI condenses everything into a 2-minute read that captures what actually matters, so you don't have to scroll through days of conversations.
Yes! You can set up separate weekly recaps for different channels — one for #engineering, another for #sales, etc. Each recap has its own schedule and delivery destination. This is great for leadership or team leads who need visibility across multiple teams.
You choose the destination when setting up: post to the same channel being summarized, send to a different channel (like #team-updates or #leadership), or deliver as a private DM. Most teams post to the same channel or a dedicated updates channel.
The AI adapts to activity levels. For quiet weeks, the recap will be shorter and note that activity was light. For busy weeks with lots of decisions and discussions, you'll get a more comprehensive summary. Either way, you'll know what (or what didn't) happen.
